Research & Development - RPA Assessment

The Resources Planning Act (RPA) Assessment reports on the status and trends of the Nation’s renewable resources on all forest and rangelands, as required by the Forest and Rangeland Renewable Resources Planning Act of 1974. Renewable resources evaluated in RPA Assessment reports include fish and wildlife, water, forests, range, wilderness, as well as the ability of those resources to provide outdoor recreation opportunities. Since 1990, the effects of climate change on forest resources have been an additional focus of Assessment research. RPA Assessment results are used by public and private land managers to set a broad-scale context for evaluating future changes in renewable resources.

Interim Update of the 2000 RPA Assessment --- Highlights

The Interim Update of the 2000 RPA Assessment provides a snapshot of current U.S. forest and rangeland conditions (all ownerships), identifies drivers of change for natural resource conditions, and projects the effects of those drivers on resource conditions 50 years into the future. The 2000 RPA Assessment report was organized around the Montreal Process Criteria and Indicators for sustainable forests. Therefore, the same organizational structure was used for the Interim Update of the 2000 RPA Assessment.

The information in the Interim Update is supported by a variety of publications, including Forest Service General Technical Reports (GTRs), journal articles, and books.
