Wanted: qualified teachers Toledo Blade December 1-LARGE numbers of children, especially low-income African-Americans and Latinos, are being taught critical core courses - English, math, science, and social studies - by teachers who have neither an academic major nor a teaching certificate in the subjects they teach. And states have been glossing over the problem while the U.S. Department of Education looked the other way.
Norfork school receives national award Baxter (AR) Bulletin December 2-Among the school's achievements this year were high sixth-grade scores. The students scored a 96 percent proficiency in math, with 67 percent of those students scoring advanced, said elementary principal Vicki Hurst. In literacy, 95 percent scored proficient with 57 percent scoring advanced.
Accountability will improve schools Daily Herald November 22-"The evidence is clear. Illinois students across the state consistently score at or below average on national tests. ... A student can graduate from an Illinois public school having fulfilled every requirement and passed every test and still be unprepared for postsecondary education and work."
S.F. schools chief wants higher bar for grads San Francisco Chronicle November 21-San Francisco schools Superintendent Carlos Garcia wants to raise the bar for earning a high school diploma - requiring every graduating senior, starting with the class of 2014, to pass all the college prep classes required for admission to the University of California and California State University systems.
