Training for the future

President Elect Obama:  I would recommend that consideration be given to spending some education funds to support a consortium of new energy technology companies and community colleges to develop and implement training programs for those new technologies.  For example,  locally , Germanna Community College has a technology center with plenty of acreage avaialbe to it.  Could not this be a location for training in the building and operating of wind mills and solar power operations for electricity generation?  As so many people have lost their jobs (and will continue to do so) and as there appears to be an increase in the number of people going back for education/training in other fields, this would be a prime opportunity to move forward in advancing your ideas for reducing our reliance on oil and reducing carbon emissions while providing the needed training for the technicians in these areas.  As these technologies come on line in earnest, folks needing jobs will be ready to do the work.

Also, would be an extension of many specialized contractors including roofing, for instance, with the implementation of solar energy systems in single or multi-tenant situations .  Or architects for Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV), ...  In addition to renewable energy, but also energy effeciency such as the use of solid state lighting (SSL).

It appears to be a substantial issue if the balance of systems and balance of plant would be developed and people receive training, and skills for the use and the tools.  For instance, customer sited photovoltaics (CSPV) are a proven working technology.

Educate the Person

Our public education warehouses future workers.  Young impressionable students are valued largely for their economic usefulness.  They learn to value themselves only for their use-value.  Our education system should honor the persons passing through it.  More than anything else, youth need to learn who they are.  Schools should help them cultivate a strong sense of self.  When every student learns that each person is valuable as a person, the world will change for the better.  (See Progressive Logic, Chapter Two.)
