In the final year of my Ph.D. from Ohio State I came to CSCOR as a Knauss Sea Grant Fellow to work on coral reef research issues. After the Fellowship, I was able to apply for a Federal position at CSCOR, where I continue to work as a Federal Program Officer administering coral reef and other ecosystem–based research projects.

This section provides information on student, employment, and grant opportunities in NOAA, particularly those concerning the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science.

In addition to federal positions, NCCOS hires personnel through a variety of channels, including contractors and internships. Current NCCOS federal positions are listed on this page, and our opportunities for students from K–12 to graduate school are listed separately. The link for volunteers is a NOAA–wide web page. See below for more information on these various ways you can work with us.

Please note that NOAA does not accept unsolicited grant proposals or job résumés.

Grant Opportunities

The majority of NCCOS’s funding of extramural research is through its Center for Sponsored Coastal Ocean Research, or CSCOR. Specific funding announcements, news, and other information on NCCOS funding can be found on their page. Additionally, the most current general Federal Register Notices and links to Announcements of Funding Opportunity, including specific requirements and criteria, are at Grants.gov. Please read their Notices and Announcements carefully.

I did not begin pursuing my Ph.D. in Marine Biology until more than 10 years out of college. Prior to this, I worked in human services, environmental policy and politics, in addition to earning a Public Policy degree and raising my children. In 2006, I started at NOAA as a contractor writing reports for Congress on harmful algal blooms. In the summer of 2007, I was hired as a program manager for hypoxia research in CSCOR.

NCCOS and NOAA welcome the chance to train, energize, and challenge the next generation of scientists, especially those interested in our planet’s ocean and coastal ecosystems. There are internships, opportunities with our partners at the Environmental Cooperative Science Center, as well as scholarships and visiting scholar programs offering many possibilities. Please visit the student opportunities page of listings for K–12, undergraduates, and graduate students.

NOAA's Office of Education has a central clearinghouse for students interested in internships, scholarships, fellowships, and our educational partners.

Synthesis of Education Programs, Scholarship, Loan, and Internship Opportunities Available to Assist in Increasing the Number of Minorities Working in Fisheries and Marine Sciences (2007, NCCOS Technical Memorandum NOS NCCOS 53)

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has a long history of fostering minority development in the sciences and increasing minority participation in marine, environmental and atmospheric sciences.Cover of Synthesis of Education Programs, Scholarship, Loan, and Internship Opportunities Available To Assist In Increasing The number of Minorities Working In Fisheries And Marine Sciences The traditional approach to educating the fisheries scientist typically immerses the student in issue techniques specific to fisheries, often at the expense of a solid foundation in the basic sciences, particularly biology, chemistry and mathematics. There is, however, a need to begin the process in the early educational years and build upon this throughout high school and college. This material was gathered (and published in 2007) to assist guidance counselors, teachers, and minority students potentially interested in marine science or science education of the available opportunities for education and training, and provide information on scholarships and internships. Although we emphasize information pertinent to minority students, much of the material is relevant to any student seeking information on educational opportunities.
