Title and Description:
2008 Groundfish Assessment Review (GARM III)
Amendment 13 to the Northeast Multispecies Fishery Management Plan required benchmark assessments and assessment updates to be conducted during calendar year 2008 for all species included in the plan. The results are to be available for fishery managers to use in making any needed adjustments to the fishery management plan for fishing year 2009, in order to ensure sufficient progress toward rebuilding depleted stocks. This meeting will provide peer review of the benchmark assessments and assessment updates.

Peer reviewers will be selected by:  Peer reviewers will be selected by both the agency and by a designated outside organization. The agency will designate reviewers and will also seek reviewers through the Center for Independent Experts.

How?  Paper copies of the documents that are being peer reviewed will be available to the public at the GARM meeting.

When?  The GARM meeting, scheduled for August 8- 15, 2008 is open to the public and the public is permitted to provide comments during the meeting.

Will the agency provide significant and relevant public comments to the peer reviewers before they conduct their review?  no

Primary disciplines or expertise needed in the review:  Fishery stock assessment (use research surveys, fishery data, etc., to understand past and project trends in the population), biology, ecology, population dynamics, modeling (use of mathematical models to describe the population dynamics of actual stocks)
