HCRI-RP provides kids with unique learning experience

Thanks to efforts of CSCOR’s Hawaii Coral Reef Initiative Research Program (HCRI – RP), Hawaiian and tourist families had the unique opportunity to learn about Hawaii’s reefs and then preserve them for future generations. It was all part of a free Family Fun Day held on August 20, 2004 (see flyer, pdf) organized by the HCRI – RP and hosted by the Waikiki Aquarium. Free children's games, displays, touch tanks, and interactive exhibits will take parents and children onto Hawaii's treasured nearshore reefs and the threats to them posed by alien fish, algae, invertebrates, and disease. The day also included a full-scale alien algae cleanup near the Natatorium, where visitors were welcomed to drop in and help. For more information on this and similar HCRI – RP activities, contact Mike Dowgiallo at Michael.Dowgiallo@noaa.gov or visit HCRI – RP’s website at www.hawaii.edu/ssri/hcri.
