The METRIC Instrument Reviews were designed to give researchers the information necessary to make informed decisions about choosing a measure for their needs. METRIC adapted this list of 17 questions (from McDowell and Newell, 1996) to help researchers evaluate the suitability of a measure for use in a specific research population.

METRIC begain their systematic process in 2002 by learning which variables and constructs VA researchers were studying, and which instruments were used to measure them. Once an instrument was identified, METRIC researched the relevant peer-reviewed literature, synthesized the psychometric and related data, and wrote a concise summary review. Lastly, they presented this in a format that allows for easily understanding the performance of an instrument with respect to the population of interest in research situations, with special emphasis on veterans.
