The Nursing Research Initiative Updates

The Nursing Research Initiative has been updated!

Here’s a snapshot of the major changes - but, as always, please read and refer to the full text document (72 KB, PDF) for details and explanations.

What changed?

  • Applicants must have a doctoral degree. Individuals who have completed all coursework for the doctorate may be able to apply for special eligibility waivers.
  • Nurse researchers who are hired under the Title 5 authority are eligible to apply for NRI.
  • The term 'pilot study' has been further defined and clarified- note, in particular, that a pilot study is not the same as an exploratory study.
  • Senior nurse researchers may submit a proposal for NRI pilot funding if they are pursuing a substantially and significantly different area of study.

What did not change?

  • NRI remains a mentored award for junior investigators who have not had previous IIR, R01 or other major funding.
  • NRI remains an ORD-wide program and will accept proposals for all four ORD Services (Health Services Research and Development, Rehab Research and Development, Clinical Science Research and Development, Biomedical Laboratory Research and Development). Be sure to follow service-specific guidance on budgets and funding amounts.
  • NRI has two options: "full study" and "pilot study"
