Sea Grant Programs
Taking full advantage of regional expertise and commitment, Sea Grant pursues a national agenda through a highly interactive network of Sea Grant Colleges and research institutions. Headquartered at many of the nation's premier universities, Sea Grant programs are located in coastal and Great Lake states, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. A national network of 30 Sea Grant Colleges and institutional programs shares research, outreach and education to solve old problems and explore new uses for the world's marine, Great Lakes and coastal resources. Sea Grant activities exist at the nexus of local, state, national and sometimes international interests. Illinois-Indiana Sea
Grant College Program
Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant fosters the creation and stewardship of an
enhanced and sustainable environment and economy along southern Lake
Michigan and the Great Lakes region. Established in 1966, the program's
research foci include aquaculture, biological resources, coastal business
and environment, and water quality. Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant is associated
with Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN, and the University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, IL.
Michigan Sea Grant
College Program
Michigan Sea Grant helps Michigan citizens protect and enjoy our nation's
extensive freshwater resources, tackling issues that affect the state's
ecosystem health and economic sustainability. Priorities include coastal
sustainable development, fisheries, aquatic nuisance species, coastal
wetlands, and Great Lakes education. Michigan Sea Grant is a partnership
between the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and Michigan State University
at East Lansing, MI.
Minnesota Sea Grant
College Program
Minnesota Sea Grant provides the people, tools, and the technology to
help maintain and enhance coastal and aquatic economies and resources.
Its researchers and educators focus on discovering solutions to problems
facing Lake Superior and Minnesota's inland waters. Research priorities
include sustainable coastal communities, impacts and management of nonindigenous
species, Lake Superior ecological management, economic viability, and
environmental safety in biotechnology and aquaculture. Minnesota Sea Grant
is associated with the University Minnesota at Duluth, MN.
New York Sea Grant
Institute
New York Sea Grant is in its fourth decade of "Bringing Science to
the Shore" in the Empire State. The program supports more than 60 research
and outreach projects annually in technology and product development,
fisheries and seafood safety, coastal environmental quality and processes,
aquatic nuisance species and other areas of special interest. New York
Sea Grant is a cooperative program of the State University of New York
at Stony Brook and Cornell University at Ithaca, NY.
Ohio
Sea Grant College Program
Ohio Sea Grant uses research, education, and outreach efforts to enhance
use and improve management of this nation's ocean, coastal, and Great
Lakes resources. Areas of research include aquaculture, biotechnology,
ecosystems research, marine biomedicinals and extracts, marine economics,
mineral resources, marine recreation, pollution, transportation systems
and zebra mussels. Ohio Sea Grant is a statewide program based at Ohio
State University in Columbus, OH.
Pennsylvania
Sea Grant Project
Pennsylvania Sea Grant was established in 1995 by virtue of the fact
the state enjoys 43 miles of coastline on Lake Erie. Its first projects
naturally relate to Pennsylvania's Lake Erie coastline, including upland
areas of watershed, Presque Isle and Presque Isle Bay. Its focus is on
marine extension and communications. Pennsylvania Sea Grant is associated
with Penn State University at Erie, PA.
Wisconsin Sea Grant
Institute
Wisconsin Sea Grant was established in 1968 as a statewide program dedicated
to the wise stewardship and sustainable use of Great Lakes and ocean resources.
The program is supporting projects focused on enhancing Great Lakes sport
and commercial fisheries; improving freshwater aquaculture; analyzing
ecosystem effects of zebra mussels; exploring the potential of biotechnology;
analyzing related socio-economic issues and advising coastal communities
and businesses; enhancing safety for recreational scuba divers; and investigating
the cycling of toxic contaminants in Great Lakes systems and developing
strategies for pollution remediation. Wisconsin Sea Grant is associated
with the University of Wisconsin at six campuses across the state.
Northeast Region
Connecticut Sea
Grant Program
Connecticut Sea Grant funds a variety of key research projects on marine/coastal
topics including aquaculture, biotechnology, climate change, coastal hazards,
living marine resources, water quality, watersheds, ecosystem health and
the Long Island Sound. Connecticut Sea Grant is based at the University
of Connecticut at Avery Point.
Lake Champlain Seagrant Program
Lake Champlain Sea Grant is a cooperative program of the University of
Vermont and Plattsburgh State University of New York. Its mission is
to identify and address critical ecological and economic issues affecting
the Lake Champlain basin and its resources and to share that information,
empowering communities, businesses, and other stakeholders to make informed
decisions regarding the management, conservation, utilization, and rehabilitation
of their aquatic resources for long-term environmental health and economic
growth.
Maine Sea Grant
College Program
The mission of Maine Sea Grant is to play a leadership role in marine
science and education and to promote their use in the development, management
and stewardship of marine and coastal resources. Maine Sea Grant funds
a wide range of research projects through an annual request for proposals
to provide information so that stakeholders can protect, develop, and
manage Maine's marine resources.
Massachusetts Institute
of Technology Sea Grant College Program
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sea Grant sponsors innovative
marine research guided by the unique resources of higher educational institutions
in Massachusetts and by local and national research needs. Research is
focused marine biotechnology, coastal management and utilization, technology
development, non-indigenous species, and coupled ocean observation and
modeling. MIT Sea Grant is also home to the Autonomous Underwater Vehicles
Laboratory (AUV Lab).
New Hampshire
Sea Grant Program
New Hampshire Sea Grant encourages investigation of the offshore,
nearshore, and estuarine systems. These natural systems are interrelated
and the health, vitality, and functioning of one is heavily dependent
upon the others. The research efforts currently supported fall into two
general areas: management and development of living marine resources and
coastal development.
Rhode
Island Sea Grant College Program
Rhode Island Sea Grant conducts research, training, and public outreach
on issues of importance to the marine environment. The program's outreach
focuses on coastal management, and fisheries, aquaculture, and seafood
safety and quality. Rhode Island Sea Grant is located at the University
of Rhode Island Narragansett Bay Campus, Narragansett, RI.
Woods Hole Oceanographic
Institution Sea Grant Program
The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) Sea Grant supports research,
education, and advisory projects to promote the wise use and understanding
of ocean and coastal resources for the public benefit. It's research priorities
are in the areas of estuarine and coastal processes; fisheries and aquaculture;
and environmental technology. Woods Hole Sea Grant works with a number
of educational and scientific institutions in New England and is located
at Woods Hole, MA.
Mid-Atlantic Region
Delaware
Sea Grant College Program
Delaware Sea Grant College conducts research, education, and outreach
projects to help people from all walks of life wisely use, manage, and
conserve Delaware's ocean and coastal resources. The program is funding
research projects in coastal ocean studies; marine biotechnology; environmental
technology; fisheries; coastal engineering; and education and outreach.
Maryland Sea
Grant College Program
Maryland Sea Grant won Sea Grant College status in 1982 and plays a major
role in programs to help restore the Chesapeake Bay, mainly by supporting
advanced research that will lead to sound policymaking and more effective
management of the Bay's threatened resources. Research areas include remote
sensing of Chesapeake Bay phytoplankon, oyster disease research, fisheries
resources, including aquaculture and seafood technology, and toxicants
in the Bay. Maryland Sea Grant is located at the University of Maryland
at College Park, MD.
New Jersey Sea Grant Program
New Jersey Sea Grant Program has been managed by the New Jersey Marine
Sciences Consortium since 1976, and won designation as a Sea Grant program
in 1989. The program has been in the forefront of research, education
and outreach in contaminant reduction, fisheries research, coastal engineering,
hazard mitigation, and environmental modeling. Among highlights are efforts
to rebuild the state's oyster industry and innovative research evaluating
the chemical changes in algal and bacterial production resulting from
increased loading rates of dissolved organic nitrogen to estuaries, an
effort that has blossomed into a full-range interdisciplinary water quality
monitoring and watershed management project.
North Carolina Sea
Grant College Program
North Carolina Sea Grant has focused the intellectual resources of North
Carolina's major universities on coastal economic development, coastal
ecosystem health and human resources since 1970. The program is working
to focus cutting-edge research on challenges for Carolina's coastal future,
such as population growth in rural counties, declining fisheries, deteriorating
water quality in tributaries and estuarine waters, and increasing public
demand for information on coastal and marine issues. North Carolina Sea
Grant is associated with North Carolina State University at Raleigh, NC.
Virginia
Sea Grant College Program
Virginia Sea Grant facilitates research, educational,
and outreach activities promoting sustainable management of marine resources
in Chesapeake Bay and along Atlantic Ocean shorelines. Key research topics
include fish and shellfish aquaculture, enhanced seafood safety through
hazard analysis critical control point principles, commercial and recreational
fisheries research, and coastal community development. Virginia Sea Grant
is associated with the College of William and Mary. The program is located
at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) in Gloucester Point,
VA.
Southeastern Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico Region
Florida Sea Grant
College Program
Florida Sea Grant applies the scientific expertise of 15 private and public
universities and research facilities toward solving the state's coastal
problems. Through the funding of timely research in fisheries, aquaculture,
marine biotechnology and coastal processes, the program allows the best
and the brightest researchers together to resolve problems that are clearly
of major importance in the state. Florida Sea Grant is headquartered at
the University of Florida at Gainesville, FL,
Georgia
Sea Grant College Program
Georgia Sea Grant supports a wide range of marine research, especially
in the areas of technology development to measure impact of economic activity
on the environment; enhancement of the quality and supply of seafood;
and monitoring sustaining the health of Georgia's coastal ecosystems.
Georgia Sea Grant College Program is headquartered at the University of
Georgia at Athens, GA.
Puerto
Rico Sea Grant College Program
Puerto Rico Sea Grant has been active since 1980 in working toward
the conservation and wise development of the island's marine and coastal
resources. Its research focuses particularly on marine fisheries reserves,
essential fish habitat, natural disaster reduction, and coastal water
quality. Puerto Rico Sea Grant serves a multicultural, international community
in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Latin America and the Caribbean
region. Puerto Rico Sea Grant is associated with the University of Puerto
Rico at San Juan, PR.
South Carolina Sea Grant
Consortium
S.C. Sea Grant Consortium is a university-based network supporting
research, education, and outreach to conserve coastal resources and enhance
economic opportunity for the people of South Carolina.
Louisiana Sea Grant
College Program
Louisiana Sea Grant develops knowledge, technology, personnel, and
public understanding to advance the sustainable and economically viable
use of marine and coastal environments and resources. Research is targeted
mainly in the areas of natural fisheries, aquaculture, coastal and wetland
resources, and seafood products. A key focus is the transfer of research-generated
technology to the marketplace. Louisiana Sea Grant activities were established
at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA, in 1968.
Mississippi-Alabama Sea
Grant Consortium
Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium is an organization of nine institutions
which conduct research, education, and advisory service activities that
foster the stewardship and sustainable use of marine and coastal resources
for the benefit of the public in Mississippi and Alabama. It supports
research and activities mainly in coastal ecosystems and habitats, sustainable
fisheries, marine biotechnology and industrial ecology, and marine education
and outreach.
Texas Sea Grant
College Program
Texas Sea Grant was one of the first four state programs established under
the National Sea Grant College Act of 1966. It supports coastal and marine-related,
problem-oriented research, especially in the areas of fisheries recruitment
and aquaculture. The program also publishes an award-winning quarterly,
Texas Shores, to keep the public and user groups advised of research
results and educational activities. The Texas Sea Grant College Program
is headquartered in Bryan, Texas, and is part of the College of Geosciences
at Texas A&M University.
Pacific Region
Alaska Sea Grant
College Program
Alaska Sea Grant headquarters and public information offices are located
on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus. Alaska Sea Grant helps bolster
the long-term value of Alaska's marine resources by funding scientific
research on marine ecosystems and the effects of human activity and natural
environmental changes on ocean resources. The findings and other information
are disseminated by a statewide network of Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory
agents, resource specialists, and communications specialists. Below are
the primary areas of research and public outreach.
California Sea Grant
College Program
California Sea Grant is the largest of 29 state programs in a national
network dedicated to the understanding, conservation, and wise use of
our coastal and marine resources. The program supports advanced research
on marine issues such as studying marine bacteria as a remover of metal
pollutants from bays and estuaries and cultured marine fungi as a new
source for drugs. California Sea Grant is associated with the University
of California at La Jolla, CA.
Southern
California Sea Grant College Program
Southern California Sea Grant has served the Southern California coastal
region for over 25 years. Its research emphasis on the "urban ocean" has
yielded important information about sewage disposal at sea, the presence
and survival of viruses in the coastal ocean, planning issues associated
with ports, and issues of marine recreation and tourism. The USC Sea Grant,
based at the University of Southern California, supports projects addressing
the issues and opportunities of Los Angeles and other metropolitan areas
near, using, and benefitting from the sea.
Hawaii Sea
Grant College Program
Hawaii Sea Grant has been a leader in aquaculture, coastal processes and
technology development in its 31 years of service to Hawaii and the Pacific.
Among past achievements are advances in ocean water quality monitoring,
seaweed agronomy, prawn aquaculture, fisheries research, fisheries enhancement,
precious corals, and deep sea technology. Hawaii Sea Grant is associated
with the University of Hawaii, in Honolulu, HI.
Oregon Sea Grant College
Program
Oregon Sea Grant works to further knowledge of the marine and coastal
environments of the Pacific Northwest, and the forces - natural and human
- that shape their destiny. From that knowledge, it is hoped, will come
better understanding of the complex biologic, geologic, social, and economic
forces that shape the region, and better stewardship of its resources.
Oregon Sea Grant is associated with Oregon State University at Corvallis,
OR.
Washington Sea
Grant College Program
The Northwest region's dependence on marine-related natural resources
and marine trade, and the threats facing the marine environment, provide
the framework within which Washington Sea Grant program has worked for
27 years. The program's goal is to maximize productive use of marine
resources while preserving and if necessary helping to restore the essential
qualities of a healthy marine environment. Washington Sea Grant is associated
with the University of Washington in Seattle, WA.
