FSL staff selected for 2005 NOAA Administrator's Award
Leslie Hart, HPCS management team lead, and Scott Nahman, logistics management specialist, of the Forecast Systems Laboratory have been selected to receive a 2005 NOAA Administrator's Award. This honor recognizes them along with several NOAA colleagues for their "extraordinary efforts, dedication, and teamwork to develop and issue integrated requirements for a NOAA high performance computer system that realistically demonstrates our One-NOAA vision."
Last year NOAA established a new high performance computing (HPC) strategy designed to instill a "One NOAA" vision for HPC resources. The team collaborated on ways to create seamless partnerships with offices, laboratories, centers, and external groups so that NOAA can share HPC resources to cost-effectively meet national needs. This new strategy encompasses a holistic approach to the HPC architecture, which will provide greater efficiency and ensure the application of appropriate technology to accomplish NOAA's mission.
Messrs. Hart and Nahman served on the procurement team that created requirements for a next-generation research and development high performance computer system which meets all aspects of the new strategy. The NOAA Chief Information Office organized the team, recruiting members from the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, Forecast Systems Laboratory, National Weather Service, and National Centers for Environmental Prediction. Other FSL employees who made significant contributions to this project include John Parker, Jennifer Valdez, Kevin Brundage, Paul Hyder, Ed Moxley, Lee Cohen, and Bobby Kelley.
The awards ceremony will be held May 13, 2005 in the NOAA Science Center in Silver Spring, MD.
