Abstract: (CIT): Dr. Shimojo's research teams recently work on crossmodal integration. Based on their early findings on how much audition can affect vision not just quantitatively but also qualitatively, they have extended their quest for (a) integrations among other modalities, such as tactile-visual, (b) similarities between crossmodal and within-modal integrations, and (c) development of crossmodal integration in infants. Their recent work on these issues indicates common principles of neural computation that govern those seemingly diverse crossmodal phenomena. The NIH neuroscience seminar series features lectures and discussions with leading neuroscientists. Sponsored by NINDS, NIMH, NIDCD, NIDA, NICHD, NEI, NIAAA and NIDCR, this year's series offers advances that span the areas of molecular, cellular, and developmental neuroscience as well as cognitive sciences and neuroscience related topics in pain and other diseases.
