Description: The mammalian cerebral cortex is divided into a map of anatomically and functionally distinct areas. Dr. Grove is testing a new model in which the area map is patterned by strategies used elsewhere in the embryo. This model, together with an innovative method of gene transfer into living mouse embryos, has opened up a rich new line of research into the problem. The Grove lab has found that a secreted signaling molecule, FGF8, specifies position along the anterior-posterior axis of the neocortical area map. Manipulating FGF8 in the embryo shifts area boundaries. Introducing a new source of FGF8 elicits partial area duplications, revealed by ectopic somatosensory barrel fields.
