Kaletra (lopinavir/ritonavir)

Type of Drug: Protease Inhibitor

Once HIV has infected a cell and made copies of itself, it uses an enzyme called protease to process itself correctly so it can be released from the cell to infect other cells. Protease inhibitors work by blocking that enzyme.

Approved adult dosing

Lopinavir 200 mg + ritonavir 50 mg in a single tablet

two tablets, two times a day

four tablets, once a day

Note: This dosage may not be appropriate for people who have taken other HIV medications in the past; consult your medical provider

Notes on taking this medication

Take with or without food
Kaletra interacts with many other drugs; persons using Kaletra with those drugs may need an adjustment to their dose of Kaletra or the other drugs; consult your medical provider

Side effects

Nausea; vomiting; diarrhea; headaches
Liver inflammation and increased liver enzyme levels
Elevations in cholesterol and triglycerides
Abnormal accumulation of body fat
Increased blood sugar
