Acceptance Criteria
Who Should Attend?
The MIPH Course is intended for public health professionals from developing countries who are able to conduct management training in their own countries following the course. Public health professionals may come from non-governmental organizations (NGOs), academic institutions and ministries of health. Applications to the course are accepted on a competitive basis. SMDP admits participants to the course based on:
Training experience
- Applicants should have prior training experience providing training to
colleagues or clients using adult learning techniques.
Mandate to conduct training
- The applicants' own countries should support the applicants'
commitment to provide training upon their return home. The MIPH course
work includes implementing at least one workshop to train other public
health colleagues in the applicants' own country. Those colleagues then
implement management learning projects over six to nine months.
English language capability
- The course is taught in English with no translators available.
Applicants should have the equivalent of a 550 TOEFL score. Although we
do not require participants to submit proof of TOEFL, applicants should
feel comfortable speaking and hearing standard English.
Funding to support follow-on in-country training and for SMDP technical assistance
- SMDP uses a four-part strategy to develop management training capacity in developing countries. This strategy includes conducting a situation analysis of the applicant's organization's management gaps, providing follow-on technical assistance, and developing sustainable management capacity.
Applicants should have funding commitments from a sponsor/donor for conducting in-country management training workshops. This funding also enables SMDP staff to provide assistance in developing the workshops and in supervising applied learning projects. Please contact SMDP for cost estimates tailored to your country's needs.
