Publication History

The Bulletin of the United States Fish Commission is one of the oldest fisheries journals in the world. It has been an official publication of the U.S. Government since 1881, under various titles, and is the U.S. counterpart to other highly regarded governmental fisheries science publications. It publishes original research or interpretative articles in all scientific fields that bear on marine fisheries and marine mammal science.

Scope of coverage

"In 1881, Congress authorized the annual publication of a Bulletin for the purpose of utilizing and promptly publishing the large amount of interesting correspondence in reference to matters pertaining to fish culture" according to Spencer F. Baird, 1st Commissioner.

The Bulletin along with the Fish Commission has undergone several name changes from Bulletin of the United States Fish Commission (1881-1903), Bulletin of the Bureau of Fisheries (1904-1911), Bulletin of the United States Fish Commission (1912-1940), Fishery Bulletin of the Fish and Wildlife Service (1941-1970) and finally Fishery Bulletin (1971-present). Fishery Bulletins from 1999-present can be viewed at the NMFS Scientific Publications Office's Fishery Bulletin Current and Archived Issues page.

Volume 50 is missing from the Silver Spring Collection, and is unavailable in this digital collection also.
