Feet Can Last a Lifetime - A Health Care Provider's Guide to Preventing Diabetes Foot Problems
This comprehensive kit for health care providers contains ready-to-use foot exam forms, Medicare certification forms for therapeutic footwear, a sample disposable sensory testing monofilament, reproducible patient education materials, and current resource and reference materials.

Feet Can Last a Lifetime, Videotape for Patients and Health Care Professionals
Part 1. Patient Education--A comprehensive guide to proper foot care that includes a sensory foot examination with a monofilament by a health care provider; self-examination of the foot; daily skin care and proper nail, callus, and corn care; selection of footwear; and the role of a podiatrist. (Approximately 11 minutes.)

Part 2. Health Care Provider Education--A step-by-step guide to conducting a foot examination; performing a sensory exam with a monofilament; assessing a patient's risk category; and counseling a patient about proper foot care. (Approximately 11 minutes.)

 

This videotape was adapted from material produced by the LEAP program at the Gillis W. Long Hansen's Disease Center, Rehabilitation Branch, Carville, LA. The tape has no copyright and may be reproduced. The original 80-minute professional videotape and a Spanish version of the patient videotape are available free of charge from the LEAP Program. This 12-page, illustrated patient booklet provides step-by-step instructions for proper foot care. Includes a tear-off reminder sheet of foot care tips and a patient "To Do" list. Also available in Spanish.

Foot Care and Diabetes 1993-Present
This is a database search from the diabetes subfile of the Combined Health Information Database (CHID). Each citation includes the author, title, and source of the item and a summary. Depending on the type of material, the citation also may include information about a corporate author, where to obtain the item, and its price. Formats of audiovisuals are provided. CHID is available online or a copy of the search is available from the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse (NDIC).

Diabetic Neuropathy: The Nerve Damage of Diabetes
This 12-page fact sheet for patients describes the causes, symptoms, and major types of neuropathy, provides information about diagnosis and treatment, as well as the findings of the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial as they relate to neuropathy.

This 76-page spiral-bound book for adults with diabetes focuses on the value of glucose control, team work, community and family support, and simple preventive steps for helping to promote health and prevent complications (Chapter 9 covers footcare). Yellow record sheets are provided for recording tests that should be done once a year and at every visit.

The Prevention and Treatment of Complications of Diabetes: A Guide for Primary Care Practitioners
This 93-page book describes ways to help the primary care provider prevent, detect, and treat major diabetes complications. An office guide in the appendix offers a brief synopsis of the recommendations contained in the body of the text. The guide may be photocopied and placed in the medical record. This book is available only on the Internet.
