Introduction
The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has in its custody nearly 200,000 electronic records files. These holdings reflect the Federal government's usage of computers for statistical data analysis, regulatory purposes, and administrative functions.
Where Records are Located
- Washington, DC area
The Electronic and Special Media Records are located at the National Archives in College Park. We accession, preserve, and provide access to electronic records transferred to NARA from agencies in the executive, legislative and judicial branches. More. . . -
Presidential Libraries
The Presidential Libraries also hold electronic records among their materials. For example, the holdings of the Ronald Reagan Library and George Bush Library include systems developed by the White House that contain databases of electronic record material. These materials are processed in accordance with the requirements of the Presidential Records Act.

Legislative Electronic Records:
The records of Congress also include electronic records. The Electronic and Special Media Records Services Division preserves these records and provides reproductions to researchers, when appropriate, on behalf of the Center for Legislative Archives. However, many of these materials, of very recent origin, are not yet open to the public under the access rules of Congress (House Rule VII opens records after thirty years except for investigative records and Senate Resolution 474 opens most records after twenty years).
