Research at the National Archives

Accessing Microfilm

Find what Microfilm is Available

  • Search for descriptions of microfilm publications in the online Microfilm Catalog.

    • Each description shows a list of all National Archives facilities that have copies of a microfilm publication. Please note that many microfilm publications are only available in a few locations, and some facilities may have only partial holdings. See the individual Regional Archives pages for additional information on regional holdings.
    • Each description shows whether or not the publication is for sale, with a link to purchase information.
  • Also check the subject-oriented guides in the Microfilm Catalog online, (e.g. census, military, American Indians, Federal court records, Black studies, immigration and passenger lists, diplomatic records). This contains detailed descriptions of the original records and roll-by-roll listings, as well as information on research and ordering.

To search the subject catalogs online:
    1. From the main Microfilm Catalog page, click Advanced Search (next to the Search button)
    2. In the righthand column, under Subject Catalog, select the catalog by name
    3. Hit "Search"
  • Further information on available microfilm is provided on several of the genealogy topics pages, and on the list of new microfilm issued.
