Clinical Resources & Guidelines >> Electrophysiology

As a physical therapist working with the Indian Health Service (IHS), there are numerous opportunities for increased scope and advanced training. One of these opportunities is in the area of clinical electrophysiology. The Indian Health Service is often a leader in progressive health care approaches, and training in clinical electrophysiology (NCV/EMG examination) is one area in which the Indian Health Service has a rich history. One significant reason for this progressive approach is the autonomy a therapist has to practice fully those skills allowed in our national practice act – which includes clinical electrophysiology. Although the educational and clinical opportunities vary clinic to clinic, a therapist with the real desire to pursue clinical electrophysiology or some other specialty will ultimately locate the resources to make it happen.

Currently and in the recent past, three therapists have been approved to receive advanced training leading to a Doctor of Science degree specifically in the area of clinical electrophysiology. As a more introductory option, the Indian Health Service has for several years sponsored a NCV/EMG course that is offered to all therapists in the IHS. These and other opportunities, coupled with resolve and our inherent autonomy, allows therapists to achieve advanced skills in many areas important to themselves and the profession of physical therapy.

If you have specific questions about clinical electrophysiology and the IHS, please feel free to contact CDR Michael LaPlante PT,DSc,ECS at 928-289-6179 or michael.laplante@wihcc.org.
