Applications for the 2008 Scholarship Program were due July 11, 2008. No new applications will be accepted until next year.

  • Applicants selected to receive awards will be notified on an ongoing basis.
  • Applicants not selected to receive awards will be notified in October.
  • No other notifications will be made.

This Applicant Information Bulletin is provided for information only and will be replaced with a new Applicant Information Bulletin for the 2009 application cycle.

The National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program is a competitive U.S. Government program that awards scholarships to students in training to be

  • allopathic and osteopathic physicians
  • dentists
  • certified nurse-midwives
  • certified family nurse practitioners
  • physician assistants

The scholarship consists of payment for tuition, fees, other reasonable educational costs, and a monthly support stipend.

In return, the students agree to provide one (1) year of service in the Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) of greatest need to which they are assigned for each school year or partial school year of scholarship support received, with a minimum 2-year service commitment and a maximum 4-year commitment.

Executive Summary

The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Scholarship Program Application Information Bulletin (AIB) is provided to assist students in preparing their 2008-2009 application.  This AIB contains instructions for completing the application and all required forms.  It also provides background information on NHSC Scholarship Program. 

The following changes to this year's application requirements will assist applicants in understanding and completing the application.

  1. Applicants are required to:
    • Submit their application through the on-line portal
    • Provide the following information on Work/Volunteer Experience(s)
      1. Activity
      2. Dates Involved
      3. Hours Spent per Event
      4. Frequency - On line
    • Respond to five essay-style questions -- Supplemental Document
    • Submit a transcript from their last complete year of academic training - Supporting Document 
    • Submit one Dean/Faculty Advisor Evaluation letter - Supporting Document 

  2. Applicants must certify that they are not:
    • Currently excluded (suspended or debarred) or disqualified by a Federal agency from participating in covered transactions.
    • Delinquent on repayment of any Federal debt. An applicant is considered to be delinquent on a Federal debt if he or she has ever been more than 31 days past due on a scheduled payment.  In addition, applicants that are delinquent on a service obligation and/or Federal debt will not be selected for scholarships regardless of circumstances.
  1. Applicants will no longer be required to complete the application booklet since this has been replaced with the essay questions and other supporting documents. 

  2. All supporting documents must be RECEIVED by the July 11, 2008 due date.  Any applicant that fails to submit a complete application by the deadline will be considered non-responsive and will not be considered for funding under this announcement.

  3. No reminder letter for missing supporting documentation will be sent out.
