Children were the pride, joy, beauty, and chief delight of the quarter, Chinatown, San Francisco. These children are decked on in their holiday dress on the sidewalk in Chinatown, San Francisco. The Exclusion Act of 1882 prevents them from becoming naturalized citizens. They may, however, attend a Chinese-only school; they are not allowed to attend public schools. Arthur Genthe (1869 - 1942) took the photograph. He had abandoned his training as a classical scholar to pursue photography after immigrating to the United States in 1895.
