BOATERS ADVISED TO WATCH OUT FOR RIGHT WHALES
|
From mid-November to mid-April local boaters are likely to encounter North Atlantic right whales in coastal waters. Pregnant females come to our area to give birth, and because of their black skin, lack of a dorsal fin and tendency to lull just below or on the water's surface, they are especially vulnerable to boat strikes. Scientists estimate that in 2002, a minimum population of 313 right whales inhabited the North Atlantic, making them among the most endangered of marine mammals and as such are protected by federal regulations.
It is illegal to approach any right whale within 500 yards (about the length of five football fields). Any vessel finding itself within the 500 yard buffer must depart immediately at a safe, slow speed.
