The Library's collections contain many images of people reading and this picture of thoughtful parents listening to their daughter read is from the Library's "Cabinet of American Illustration Collection" housed in the Prints and Photographs Division. Andre Castaigne was a portrait painter and illustrator. Born in Angouleme, France in 1860, he studied in Paris with Gerome before coming to America. He was active in San Francisco from the early 1890s until the earthquake in 1906. Castaigne was briefly mentioned in an encyclopedia of the time in connection with a series he illustrated on Indian tribal life. The commentator said the illustrations were produced "with an anthropologist's eye for accurate detail." For a brief time he was an illustrator for the Century Company of New York City. He died in Paris, France in 1929.
