On August 8, 2005, Nita Mary Mayo left her home in Hawthorne, Nevada, for a one-day shopping trip over the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the western side of the Mountains. She had indicated to a friend that she would be going over Sonora Pass on State Route 108, and that she would return home that evening and would be at work on August 9, 2005. It is believed Mayo left the Hawthorne area at approximately 11:00 am.

When Mayo did not return to work on August 9, 2005, a missing persons report was filed with local law enforcement authorities. During the evening of August 10, 2005, Mayo's silver Ford Taurus station wagon was located at Donnell Vista Point. The car was locked and Mayo's personal property was still inside of it.
