Clinical Guidelines

The IHS Division of Diabetes (DDTP) continues to be a leader in publishing standards of care and clinical guidelines for diabetes treatment and prevention. These clinical guidelines help health care professionals provide consistent, quality care to American Indians and Alaska Natives with diabetes or at risk of developing diabetes.

The IHS clinical guidelines:

  • Address the unique aspects of care for American Indians and Alaska Natives.
  • Enable health care professionals and other members of diabetes care teams to offer consistent, quality care to American Indians and Alaska Natives.
  • Were developed using a consensus process that involved health care professionals and scientific experts within and outside the IHS.
  • Reflect and support the concept of a team approach to diabetes care in Indian health care facilities and the communities that surround them.

The IHS Division of Diabetes updates the clinical guidelines every few years to keep them current with the ever-changing field of diabetes care.
