A key responsibility of the IHS Division of Diabetes (DDTP) is to provide information and resources on diabetes treatment and prevention for American Indians and Alaska Natives. The rapid distribution of diabetes information from the national level to the local level not only helps health care providers effectively treat and prevent diabetes, but also provides individuals with the information and support they need to improve their health.

Because diabetes is a complex condition, information and resources are organized into five main categories:

  • Diabetes Prevention:  Diabetes can be prevented through improved nutrition, weight management, physical activity, medication, and education. Information and resources on diabetes medications, clinical guidelines, and best practices coming soon.
  • Diabetes Treatment:  Effective diabetes treatment improves the overall health, well-being, and quality of life for people with diabetes. Information and resources on promoting healthy lifestyle changes, effective prevention strategies, and best practices coming soon.
  • Diabetes and Youth:  Overweight and obesity increases the risk for type 2 diabetes, which is growing rapidly among young American Indians and Alaska Natives. Information about issues related to diabetes in children and youth coming soon.
  • Behavioral Health:  Behavioral changes are important to the success of diabetes treatment and prevention efforts. Information and resources on behavioral health issues coming soon.
  • Other Diabetes Topics:  Information on general diabetes topics coming soon.
