Division of Diabetes Treatment and Prevention

Congress established the IHS Division of Diabetes Treatment and Prevention (DDTP) in 1979 in response to the emerging epidemic of diabetes in American Indian and Alaska Native communities. Formerly called the IHS National Diabetes Program, the mission of the IHS Division of Diabetes is to develop, document, and sustain clinical and public health efforts to treat and prevent diabetes in American Indians and Alaska Natives.

The IHS Division of Diabetes provides services and support for:

• Special Diabetes Program for Indians  (SDPI):  The IHS Division of Diabetes provides leadership and oversight for the Special Diabetes Program for Indians by administering and evaluating grant programs, as well as coordinating an extensive network that provides diabetes treatment and prevention services for American Indians and Alaska Natives.
• Training :  The IHS Division of Diabetes sponsors and coordinates a variety of web- and computer-based trainings, conferences, and meetings to help health care providers, Tribal leaders, and community members learn more about diabetes treatment and prevention, share lessons learned, and network with one another.
• Tools :  The IHS Division of Diabetes facilitates the development of culturally relevant diabetes clinical guidelines, best practices, and education materials.
