Section 508 Guidance for IT Managers

Section 508 assures that Federal employees who are individuals with disabilities
have comparable access to EIT products as a Federal employee who is not an individual with a disability. Section 508 also assures that individuals with disabilities who seek information or services from a Federal agency will have comparable access as those who are not disabled.

Section 508 is NOT just a requirement for Web sites.

Section 508 is NOT just a requirement for public access.

EIT products are hardware, software, data, products and documentation. If EIT products are developed, procured, maintained or used within the agency must meet the standards set forth by the Access Board. If there is no product that meets the standard or if modifying the product to meet the standard would impose an undue burden on the agency, an alternate method for accessing the information must be provided. However, a fundamental alteration in the nature of a product or its components is not required.

Existing EIT products do not have to be modified immediately, but if there is a
significant redesign to a system, it will have to meet the standards.
