Captain Kidd in New York Harbor / J.L.G. Ferris. The artist Jean Leon Gerome Ferris depicts Captain William Kidd welcoming a young woman on board his ship; other men and women crowd the deck as another woman steps aboard [ca. 1695]. Kidd, who started as a British privateer, turned pirate and was hung in London in 1701. Starting in the early 20th century, Ferris created a series of commemorative interpretations of early American development called "The Pageant of a Nation."
