Peter S. Duval, the printer of this sheet music, was born in France in 1804 or 1805. After early printing training he was asked to come to Philadelphia to work with Cephas Childs. By 1837 he had established the firm of P.S. Duval's Lithographic Establishment. In 1838 Duval issued a weekly magazine called the Parlour Review. Issued in French and English, it included four pages of music per issue as well as featured portraits of famous composers and performers, including Beethoven, Bellini, Cherubini, and many others. Duval was an early experimenter with color lithography and is credited with the first color printing although it included some hand tinting. He was eventually successful enough to win a silver medal at the Franklin Institute's exhibition in 1849. He continued to advance the technology of printing throughout his life. Like Currier and Ives, he used many artists who were never credited by name on the sheet music he published. He died in 1886. The painting was by James Fuller Queen, 1820(1) - 1886. Queen, along with another artist, provided much of the art used by Duval for many years. Medium : 1 print : chromolithograph Created/Published : G. Andre & Co. Philadelphia, c1861 Creator : P.S.
