CHECK-RAS, Version 1.4 (June 2008)

Update to CHECK-RAS, Version 1.4

The CHECK-RAS.exe file has been updated to extract and run with the report that is generated by HEC-RAS v4.0. If you already have the CHECK-RAS program established on your machine, you need only to overwrite your existing CHECK-RAS.exe file with the CHECK-RAS.exe file shown in the download list. If you are adding CHECK-RAS as a new program, use the provided set-up file, follow the directions below, and then overwrite the set-up generated CHECK_RAS.exe file with the one available here for download. Be sure that the "HEC-RAS set-up," from the CHECK-RAS "File" drop-down menu is pointing to your HEC-RAS v4.0 exe file. You must also be certain that the "Include Node Names in Table" and "Include Profile Name in Table" are NOT selected from the "Options" drop-down menu of the "Profile Output Table" within HEC-RAS v4.0. This must be confirmed prior to generating the CHECK-RAS report.

This updated CHECK-RAS also corrects a problem related to the ground station of the channel n-value when a 'horizontal variation in n-value' option is used within the associated HEC-RAS model. The original CHECK-RAS v1.4 cannot extract data if that condition exists in the HEC-RAS file.

Summary

CHECK-RAS, Version 1.4 is a program designed to verify the validity of an assortment of parameters found in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) HEC-RAS hydraulic modeling program. This program can only be installed on computers with Windows 98/NT/2000/XP operating systems.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has developed a Comment Form to accommodate users' submittals of questions and suggestions regarding CHECK-RAS and other FEMA computer programs.

The CHECK-RAS program, including the User's Manual, can be downloaded in WinZip format below. Software installation information is also provided below. If you need additional information on how to obtain WinZip, see the Download Plug-in box at the bottom of this page.

Download CHECK-RAS, Version 1.4

  1. The HEC-RAS program must be installed on your system before you can use the CHECK-RAS program. If you have the HEC-RAS program on your system, skip to Step 2. If you do not have HEC-RAS program on your system, please visit the USACE Web site to download a free copy of the program and install it on your system.

  2. If you have previously opened a project file in HEC-RAS, then you may skip to Step 4. The HEC-RAS registry is not automatically created on your system when you install the HEC-RAS program. To create the HEC-RAS registry, you must open at least one HEC-RAS project from HEC-RAS. If this is not done, CHECK-RAS will not be able to find the HEC-RAS program on your system.

  3. The default installation directory for the HEC-RAS program is the "HEC" directory. However, you may install this program elsewhere on your system or rename the default directory after installing the program (not recommended). If either of these actions is taken, the HEC-RAS registry will no longer match the location of the actual HEC-RAS program on your system. Wherever the program may be, you must make sure that the path to the application is such that the last directory in the path is "HEC" (e.g., D:\test\test1\HEC\ras.exe). If you move the directory from the default location, you must open at least one project from HEC-RAS to create the program registry for the new location. If you move the HEC-RAS program from the default location and you do not complete this step, you will not be able to use the CHECK-RAS program.

  4. Download the CHECK-RAS, Version 1.4 program from the FEMA Library.

  5. You must open the .Zip file and extract it to a local directory on your computer's hard drive. If you are using floppy diskettes, you must download all split .Zip files to the same directory* on your local disk, then open the CHECK-RAS Split Sized for Diskette Part 1 (frm_cr1.zip) file and extract the contents.

*NOTE: All of the CHECK-RAS files must be in the same directory for the program to install properly on your system.

  1. If you have a previous version of CHECK-RAS on your system, you must remove it before installing CHECK-RAS, Version 1.4. To remove the previous version, you must click the "Start" button from the Windows 98/NT/2000/XP taskbar, point to "Settings," and then select "Control Panel." You must then double-click the "Add/Remove Programs" icon, select "CHECK-RAS" from the program list, and click the "Add/Remove" button.

  2. You must return to the directory where you extracted the .Zip files in Step 5 and click on the "setup.exe" program file.

  3. You must follow the on-screen directions to install the program. The default directory is: C:\Program Files\checkras\

  4. Before running the CHECK-RAS program, you should read and follow the instructions in Chapter 3.2, "Running CHECK-RAS for the First Time," and Chapter 3.3, "Creating a HEC-RAS Report File for Subsequent Runs," of the CHECK-RAS User's Manual. These sections of the manual provide important information about making this program work properly with the HEC-RAS program.

FEMA recommends using the CHECK-RAS "Help" menu if you have difficulty with the program. Questions not answered by the "Help" menu or suggestions for software improvements can be made on the Comment Form.
