QUERI Implementation

Rapid, systematic implementation into routine practice of evidence from high quality clinical research is a priority of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). QUERI Service Directed Projects in Implementation provide a mechanism to implement and evaluate specific programs and strategies to enhance VHA health care quality and outcomes, to develop evidence and insights regarding quality improvement implementation in "real world" settings, and to facilitate development of collaborations between researchers, clinicians, administrators, and policymakers that lead to sustainable improvement in healthcare practices and health outcomes. The emphasis within QUERI Service Directed Projects is on applied, action-oriented implementation projects that use established evidence to create and document real change within an organizational unit. Projects respond rapidly to organizational needs, favor active facilitation over passive observation, modify approaches mid-stream through formative evaluations, and share resources from VHA operational entities. Service Directed Projects adopt the implementation framework used by VA's Quality Enhancement Research Initiative. Principal investigators are encouraged to integrate their work with the QUERI program and to address conditions of high priority to VHA because of prevalence, burden, urgency, or special emphasis population. Research projects where the primary purpose is to add to the evidence base for quality improvement and system change (e.g., determining whether an intervention is effective) are typically not funded through QUERI Service Directed Projects. Please refer to the portfolio "Implementation and Management Science" for such related studies. Project proposals are solicited through announcements to VA QUERI Centers, HSR&D Centers of Excellence or announcements to all VA. Upon approval of a concept paper, a full project proposal is requested form the investigator. Proposals are peer reviewed by an expert panel of reviewers, and if approved, are considered for funding. Rapid Response Projects (RRP) are pilot projects or small implementation projects which are briefer than 12 months.
