Seth A. Eisen, MD, MSc, Director of VA HSR&D

Seth A. Eisen, MD, MSc, was named Director of HSR&D effective late December 2006. Dr. Eisen received his medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis, MO and his masters of science in epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Eisen has a long history with VA research, having joined the Department of Veterans Affairs in the late 1970's as a researcher before being named Director of Ambulatory Care at the St. Louis VA Ambulatory Care facility.

Over his career, Dr. Eisen's research has included the development of a registry for 7400 monozygotic and dizygotic twin pairs, who served in the military during the Vietnam War. Dr. Eisen and colleagues from several universities continue to work with the twin registry. Dr. Eisen also is involved in a national study of Gulf War veterans and their families. In addition to his research, Dr. Eisen serves as a reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals and has authored or co-authored more than 100 journal articles.

As Director of HSR&D, Dr. Eisen has a number of areas of particular interest. An epidemiologist by training, he values information technology and accessibility of data. Therefore, one goal of his will be to ensure continued access to VA databases for research. In addition, Dr. Eisen sees wonderful opportunities for collaborations across health services, clinical science, and rehabilitation research that will enhance the quality of healthcare for all veterans. He also is interested in developing the next generation of health services researchers, as is evidenced by his work as Chair of HSR&D's Career Development Review Committee for four years prior to being named Director of HSR&D.
