Brian G. Schuster, M.D., FACP has been named director of VA's Clinical Science Research and Development Service (CSR&D).

Dr. Brian G. Schuster recently retired from active duty in the U.S. Army and service as Science Director, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, the largest and most diverse medical research institute in the Department of Defense with a staff of over 1400 and a budget of $120 million. In this position since 2001, Dr. Schuster oversaw the preparation of hundreds of research proposals from scientists around the world and, as proposals were funded, oversaw the proper conduct of research.

Dr. Schuster has an extensive background in clinical research, not only from managing a large program in which clinical research is funded and conducted, but also through his own research career. He also has gained extensive experience in policy development, particularly with regard to the review and oversight of scientific research, and is experienced in clinical research career development.

Dr. Schuster earned his undergraduate degree at Canisius College (B.A., Biology, 1966); completed a Pre-Doctoral Fellowship at the University of Florida (Pharmacology, 1969); and earned his medical degree at the University of Miami (1972). He further trained at Walter Reed Army Medical Center where he completed his residency (1973-75) and a Military Medical Research Fellowship (1977-78).

Dr. Schuster's primary research foci are infectious disease and clinical pharmacology. He has had a distinguished research career, having been the principal investigator on over $6 million in funding from the NIH. His current NIH grant is a program to integrate drug discovery from natural products, biodiversity conservation and sustainable economic development. On this study, he coordinates work at 15 separate institutions throughout the United States and in Africa. He has an impressive publication record, with 80 scientific publications, abstracts and presentations.

Dr. Schuster's career began at Walter Reed in 1975 and, since that time, he has held a number of positions including Assistant Chief, Clinical Investigation Service; Assistant to the Director for Clinical Studies; Director, Division of Experimental Therapeutics; and Associate Director for Drug Development.

He achieved the rank of Colonel in his Army career.
