Dr. Frances M. Murphy Appointed Acting Under Secetary for Health

Frances M. Murphy, M.D., M.P.H., was appointed Acting Under Secretary for Health by Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi on January 30, 2001. She has been the Deputy Under Secretary for Health since October 2, 2000. Dr. Murphy now serves as the highest official in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) and is the first woman to fill this position.

As Acting Under Secretary for Health, Dr. Murphy is the chief executive officer for VHA, responsible for oversight and operation of the nation’s largest integrated health-care system. The veterans health care system is the nation’s largest provider of graduate medical education and a major contributor to medical and scientific research.

Dr. Murphy was appointed Acting Deputy Under Secretary for Health on August 12, 1999. She has also served as the Acting Chief Network Officer.

Prior to August 1999, she served as the Department of Veterans Affairs’ chief consultant for occupational and environmental health. Her career includes nearly 20 years as a physician, educator, and health-care administrator.

In 1979, she was awarded an M.D. degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine and in 1993 she received a Masters in Public Health from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). Dr. Murphy, who completed residency training at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., is board certified in neurology. She is an adjunct associate professor of neurology at USUHS. She is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served as a staff neurologist at Andrews Air Force Base from 1983 to 1987.
