Making Informed Consent Meaningful

Taken from the Veterans Health Administration Highlights dated October 11, 2002

VA is working to enhance the protection of human subjects in clinical research and to ensure the safety and privacy of every veteran. As part of this effort, a special supplement to the journal Medical Care was published recently titled, "Making Informed Consent Meaningful."

The supplement features articles on ethical and practical issues associated with informed consent such as: enrolling adults in clinic research who may be too impaired to make their own decision; vulnerability of research subjects to either undue influence or coercion; decision aids to assist patients in understanding complex medical information, as well as continuing efforts to improve the quality of the informed consent process.

This supplement is one outcome of a recent conference that was sponsored by VA’s Office of Research and Development. The supplement is available at: http://www.1ww-medicalcare.com.
