NEW ORLEANS, La. -- After more than 52,000 visits since its opening on Oct. 11, 2005, the Jewish Community Disaster Recovery Center located on 5342 St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans will cease operations on May 6 at 1 p.m.

"We are pleased to have served the many hurricane victims who visited the St. Charles Avenue Disaster Recovery Center," said FEMA Transitional Recovery Office Director Scott Wells. "And we view the closing of this DRC as a positive sign that folks received the important disaster information they needed and are now moving forward with their lives."

Applicants may also access disaster information by calling the Helpline at 1-800-621-3362. Those who are hearing- or speech-impaired may register by calling 1-800-462-7585. The Helpline operates every day 6 a.m. to midnight.

At all remaining DRCs, representatives of state and federal agencies and the U.S. Small Business Administration answer questions and provide recovery information. No cash, checks, debit cards or vouchers are distributed at Disaster Recovery Centers. These centers are for the dissemination of information to assist in victim recovery. Written materials about various state and federal programs are also available to individuals and business owners.

All centers will close at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 6 due to the annual New Orleans Jazz Festival.
Normal hours of operation are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
