BATON ROUGE, La. -- The deadline to apply for disaster assistance is quickly approaching. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is encouraging those affected by either Hurricanes Katrina or Rita to register for assistance by April 10.

If you are waiting for an insurance settlement, you should register now for disaster assistance. After your settlement, you may still have unmet needs which are eligible for federal, state or local programs. Don’t wait, call FEMA now.

To register, please call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for speech- and hearing-impaired. Applications are accepted from 6 a.m. to midnight. Individuals and business owners may also register online at www.fema.gov. Information is available in multiple languages.

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003
