BATON ROUGE, La. -- This is the final week for individuals affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita to apply for disaster assistance with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The March 11 deadline is only for those who have never contacted FEMA. This applies to individuals, families and business owners affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. They should call now to register for disaster assistance.

A toll-free application telephone number is operational daily from 6 a.m. to midnight (CST) for those who suffered injury or property damage in the declared parishes affected by the disasters. Call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) to apply. Those with a speech or hearing impairment may call TTY 1-800-462-7585. For the non-English speaking public, registration assistance is available in 173 languages.

Individuals can also register for disaster assistance online at the FEMA website www.fema.gov. Click on "Online Individual Assistance Center" and the screens will prompt you through the process.

The deadline to apply for FEMA disaster assistance is midnight on March 11, 2006. Please call today.

This week in Louisiana: At the close of business on March 4, 2006, there were: 48,028 travel trailers and mobile homes on private, industrial, group and commercial sites occupied as well as 3,010 federal housing resources provided by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) occupied.
