BATON ROUGE, La. -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) issued $16.8 million in two grants to Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center (LSUHSC) to ensure public health needs are met in New Orleans. The grants will enable LSU to provide medical care in two temporary facilities while University Hospital is repaired.

One grant provides $13.1 million to lease, remodel and equip St. Charles Hospital to provide 100 medical-surgical beds. The second grant—$3.7 million—funds the lease, remodeling and equipping of Elmwood Medical Center during the 9-12 month renovation of University Hospital. Both grants ensure LSUHSC will continue to alleviate immediate public health threats in the New Orleans area as they rebuild damaged facilities.

"These grants will enable the LSU Health Sciences Center to continue to provide top-notch medical care for the residents of New Orleans as they return," said Federal Coordinating Officer Scott Wells. "Restoring public health infrastructure is an essential step to bringing New Orleans back. We will continue to work closely with state and local officials to rebuild New Orleans."

FEMA has provided more than $1.2 billion in Public Assistance funds to Louisiana as part of the recovery effort.
