BATON ROUGE, La. -- Emergency workers in disaster areas, who are also victims of Hurricanes Katrina or Rita, can be housed in the disaster area without affecting their family’s eligibility for temporary housing assistance.

“If these individuals are housed in trailers while working to restore the affected area, their families, evacuated to other areas, are still eligible for temporary housing,” said State Coordinating Officer Col. Jeff Smith.

The State of Louisiana Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are working together to assist all victims of the state’s recent hurricanes in obtaining temporary housing. Those who have not registered with FEMA should do so by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), TTY at 1-800-462-7585 for people who are speech- or hearing-impaired. Phones are staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Registration can also be done online at www.fema.gov. If they are near a Disaster Recovery Center, they can get help in registering there.

FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
