BATON ROUGE, La. -- The joint State/Federal Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) located throughout Louisiana will be open on the Columbus Day holiday, Monday, October 10, to serve those affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Victims of the hurricanes are urged to register for assistance first by calling the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or by logging on to www.fema.gov. The TTY number is 1-800-462-7585 for people who are speech- or hearing-impaired. People without telephones or Internet access can use these services for FEMA registration at any of the DRCs located across the state. After applying, those who have questions may meet face-to-face with recovery specialists.

FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
