BOSTON, Mass. -- Individuals and families who evacuated to New England from Louisiana, Mississippi or Alabama need to register for disaster aid if they haven’t already done so, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

“The important first step to receiving disaster aid for Hurricane Katrina losses is to register with FEMA,” said Ken Horak, acting regional director for FEMA Region I.

Two methods are available. Applicants can call 1 800 621 FEMA (TTY 1-800-462-7585). Those with internet access can register on-line at www.fema.gov. Applicants will receive information over the phone and by mail regarding available programs. The registration line is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week until further notice.

Because of the large number of calls to the registration line, FEMA suggests that applicants call during off-peak hours – late night or early morning.
You should have the following information ready when you call:

Evacuated individuals or families with immediate emergency needs should call the American Red Cross. Call 866-GET-INFO for the location of the nearest Red Cross office.
