SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Federal and Commonwealth officials announced today that renters, homeowners and business owners who applied for assistance and received inspections, but who have not yet received checks or correspondence from FEMA, will need to verify that their mail is not being held at the local Post Office.
"If you registered with FEMA and have not heard back from us, call FEMA's Helpline or visit the nearest Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) to check on the status of your application, and to determine if mail has been issued to you," said Justo Hernández, Federal Coordinating Officer. "Also check the Post Office to see if you have any unclaimed mail. They will keep it for 30 days after which, if not claimed, the mail will be returned to FEMA".
The DRCs continue providing support to disaster aid applicants at these locations:
- Cabo Rojo: Centro Comunal Comunidad Combate, Carr. 3301, Km. 3.0
- Humacao: Cancha Emilio E. Huyke, Ave. Tejas, Carr. 908
- Patillas: Centro de los Placeros, Calle Francisco Ortíz #32 (interior)
- Ponce: Área Enfermería Parque Paquito Montaner, Carr. Ramal #2 y Esq. Eduardo Ruberte
- Yabucoa: Cancha Pedro Albizu Campos, Carr 901, Urb. Méndez
The following DRCs will be available until January 15, 2009, when they will cease operations at 6 p.m.

- Maunabo: Centro Comunal Residencial Martorel, 300 Avenida Kennedy
- Naguabo: Coliseo Municipal, Carretera 31
- Salinas: Museo Salinas, Calle Palmer esquina Estebán Ramos (pueblo Salinas)
FEMA's Helpline number is 1-800-621-3362 (TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the hearing and speech impaired) and operators are available to answer questions from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, on Saturdays is 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., until further notice.
Individuals who suffered property damage or who had personal property losses resulting from the September 21 October 3, 2008 floods should call the helpline before the registration deadline, which is Thursday, January 15, 2009. Registration is also available online at www.disasterassistance.gov.
