What are LA-URs?

LA-URs are unclassified documents which have been reviewed by SAFE-1, the Classification Group, which makes classification determinations and assigns the LA-UR numbers. LA-URs are assigned to varied materials including papers for meetings, journal articles, books, book chapters, talks, audio visual presentations, World Wide Web postings, documents for reading rooms, etc. Many LA-URs are later published in conference proceedings, journals or books, but in some cases the LA-UR is the only "publication" of the research, and is cited by the LA-UR report number. For LA-URs to be made available to the public, they are also reviewed for potentially sensitive information, as described in the Procedure Review and Approval of Scientific and Technical Information (STI) for Public Release.

What LA-URs does the Library have?

The Library has many LA-URs, but not all. We do not automatically receive copies. We try to acquire electronic format as much as possible, and encourage authors to provide pdfs. (how to send your LA-UR)

How do I find an LA-UR?

LA-URs can be searched in the Library Catalog, which has links to electronic copies when available. They can also be searched in the internal Los Alamos Authors database, which contains data maintained by the Classification Office (SAFE-1) (667-5013), in a search interface developed by the Research Library, from 1943 to present.

Why do I get emails from the Research Library requesting my LA-UR's?

The Research Library sends out requests for LA-UR's to LANL authors. When authors send us their files, it helps us provide electronic access to reports, through our own catalog and through DOE databases. This increases the visibility of Lab research and makes the information easily accessible throughout the government research community.

Are LA-URs available from OSTI?

Some LA-URs are available from OSTI, but not all depending on access restrictions and availability of electronic copies, since OSTI will not accept paper copies of reports.
