Washington Elementary School library gets new books, extreme makeover
Students, faculty, staff and alumni at the University of Missouri-St. Louis will participate in the national MLK Holiday initiative making it “a day on,” not a day off. Led by the university’s Office of Student Life and Community Partnership Project, approximately 130 volunteers will spend time Jan. 19 at 13 local non-profit organizations celebrating King’s life through service to others.
Highlighting the 13 projects will be an extreme makeover of the library at Washington Elementary School, 1730 N. Hanley Rd., Vinita Terrace, Mo. in the Normandy School District. Volunteers will clean, paint, decorate and fill shelves with books new and old. Working from a wish list supplied by Angela Green, the school’s librarian, UMSL students, faculty and staff have been collecting books, shelves and furniture for the library.
Volunteers are expected at the school at 1:30 p.m. Megan Hill, an AmeriCorps volunteer working at UMSL and Holly Ingraham a project development specialist are coordinating the projectGreen, the librarian and principal Elaine Woodson will join the group and be available for interviews at 3 p.m.
The extreme makeover has two goals: to make the library more inviting so students will be encouraged to read and to get the community more involved in Normandy schools.
