U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP)

Our Work

USIP "thinks, acts, teaches, and trains," providing a unique combination of nonpartisan research, innovative program development, and hands-on peacebuilding support.

Center for Conflict Analysis & Prevention

The Center for Conflict Analysis & Prevention initiates and supports programs aimed at forestalling serious outbreaks of violence in key areas of the world.

Center for Mediation & Conflict Resolution

The Center for Mediation and Conflict Resolution helps mediate and resolve active conflicts around the world.

Center for Post-Conflict Peace & Stability Operations

The Center for Post-conflict Peace and Stability Operations aims to transform societies emerging from conflict by promoting stability, democracy, economic development, and social reconstruction through a variety of programs.

Centers of Innovation

The Centers of Innovation serve as centers of expertise and innovation. They include:

  • Rule of Law
The Rule of Law program conducts policy-relevant research and provides practical support for the implementation of the rule of law in transitional societies such as Nepal, Afghanistan, and Iraq.
  • Religion and Peacemaking
The Religion and Peacemaking program helps facilitate the resolution of international disputes by aiding the efforts of faith-based organizations. The program also expands knowledge about the actual and potential roles of religious organizations in international peacemaking.
  • Virtual Diplomacy
The Virtual Diplomacy Initiative explores how information and technology effect international conflict management and resolution.

Education and Training Center

One of the Institute's congressional mandates is to "serve the people and the government through the widest possible range of education and training...to promote international peace and the resolution of conflicts..." The Education and Training Center's mission is to help fulfill this mandate.

  • Education and Training Center/Domestic
The mission of the ETC/Domestic is to create and deliver courses and supporting teaching materials to improve the practice of conflict management and help professionalize the field. Target audiences include civilian and military practitioners; faculty from other institutions; and graduate, undergraduate and high school students.
  • Education and Training Center/International
The mission of the ETC/International is to help (1) international practitioners improve the skills they need to manage conflict in all its phases, from prevention to post-conflict peacebuilding; and (2) strengthen educational systems in fragile states and societies emerging from conflict.
  • Education and Training Center Expansion
USIP is currently developing a number of courses through which professionals from government, the military, NGOs, and IOs, as well as pre-professionals in the academic world can come together and receive training on core conflict management skills, as well as best practices in conflict prevention, peacemaking, and state-building. The Institute's Education and Training Center is expanding to meet this need.

Congress and USIP

USIP offers a wide array of services and resources of interest to members of Congress and congressional staff. USIP has numerous in-house staff, fellows, peace scholars, grantees, and other experts available for testimony before congressional committees. USIP also holds both public and off-the-record briefings on Capitol Hill to raise awareness on various issues, and coordinates activities to bridge the gap between research and policymaking.
