New Research Summaries about Guns and Violence
Homicides committed with firearms in America peaked in 1993 at 17,075. The figure declined steadily until leveling off in 1999 at 10,117. Gun-related homicides have increased slightly each year since 2002, and stood at 11,346 in 2005.
Teenagers and young adults are more likely than those in other age groups to die because of gun violence. Most homicides take place in urban areas.
Federal, state and local officials have developed many violence prevention programs in recent years, many of which targeted gang members.
