Evolution of the United States National Airspace: The Move Towards Performance-Based Navigation Summary The United States NAS has been in existence for nearly seventy-five years. In that time, the NAS has grown to become the largest civil airspace system in the world. As this system has developed, it has become increasingly complex and unwieldy. While this system is very safe, the infrastructure is aging and becoming more and more costly to maintain every year. This fact coupled with reduced operating revenues and increased workloads, has brought about the need to modernize. The FAA’s goal is to design an integrated, performance based national airspace system that can meet the needs of tomorrow and satisfy ICAO’s vision of a safe, secure, and seamless international air transportation system. |
