Jonathan Thompson became FEMA's Director of External Affairs in December 2007.

He has 20 years of experience executing and supervising corporate and marketing communications programs at the highest levels of U.S. corporations and government agencies.

For the last four years, Mr. Thompson worked for the Department of Defense, most recently as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs, Strategy and Operations.  In that position, he oversaw and coordinated communications planning, development and strategy for the Department's Iraq and Global War on Terror initiatives.  He worked closely with the senior leadership of the Department, White House, National Security Council and other federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security.

Mr. Thompson also worked as Director of Communications and Public Information for the Transportation Security Administration, where he established the then-new agency's communications and public affairs program.  He served as principal spokesman with all national and international media and oversaw internal communications, consumer education and outreach, stakeholder relations and media relations.

His background also includes positions as Director of Communications and External Relations for the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico and Vice President for Marketing Communications and Planning for PGI, Inc., based in Virginia.

Mr. Thompson has a Bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
